A Girl By Any Other Name was the second episode of Series One of the television series, Atlantis. It was written by Howard Overman and directed by Justin Molotnikov. It first aired on the 5th October, 2013 on BBC One. The episode introduced Jemima Rooper as Medusa.
Synopsis[]
Despite their new found fame after slaying the Minotaur, the boys are still penniless and hungry. When an old man asks them to find his missing daughter things seem on the up, but it soon becomes clear that their task isn't going to be an easy one: she has been taken by the Maenads, fanatical worshippers of the god Dionysus. With the hopes and life of the old man fading, it’s a race against time that Jason cannot turn his back on. But just when their perilous task seems at an end, he comes face-to-face with a stranger named Medusa.
Plot[]
A women is running through the woods being chased by something. She gets a moments peace before being caught by her pursuer.
In Atlantis Hercules and Jason have taken a job of guarding some supplies for the merchant Karpos. Hercules arrives late due to spending time at the tavern which angers Jason.
While Hercules takes his shift Jason visits the Oracle. She warns him away and avoids his questions about the Minotaur, angering him. Jason feels lost, confused, and aimless but the Oracle can't give him any answers. She does promise to help and protect him when she can as long as he believes in himself and follows the path available to him.
Hercules wakes the next morning and discovers his money and the frankincense he was supposed to be guarding are gone. Jason and Pythagoras are less than forgiving when Hercules tries to lie his way out of the screw up and are trying to find a way to fix it when someone knocks on their door. While Hercules hides the knocking becomes louder and louder until Jason finally answers revealing an old man looking for the people who slew the Minotaur.
The man explains that he has been looking for his daughter for a long time. He finally discovered that Demetria had found work in the palace kitchens but was told by the workers that she has been missing for three days. After hearing about Jason he decided to ask them for help but has little to offer in return.Hercules refuses but Jason decides to help him when the man says he will die soon.
Jason is seen being escorted into the palace by the servant girl who dresses him before going into the labyrinth. They are discovered by Princess Ariadne but she let's them go despite knowing that it is forbidden for Jason to be there and wishes him luck in finding the girl.
Korinna introduces Jason to Celandine, the last person to see Demetria before she disappeared. She tells him that Demetria went missing after she was sent to gather herbs and that no one looked for her since the lives of servants have little value. She is resistant in helping Jason find the place Demetria went until Korinna promises to inform Ariadne of her kindness.
Hercules and Pythagoras are heading home when they see the merchant who hired them outside their door. Hercules immediately runs away.
Celandine leads Jason far away from the city and explains that the king doesn't care how far away his servants have to go for herbs. Once they reach a secluded part of the forest Celandine attacks Jason from behind but he knocks her knife away. After running off she drinks a poison before telling Jason that Demetria has not been harmed but sent to a better place where her god will provide for her. As Jason looks at the poison's container a strange creature watches from afar.
Pythagoras identifies the poison and recognizes the symbol on its container as that of the god Dionysus. The cook was a Maenad, the dedicated female followers of the god. Celandine killed herself to keep their secrets safe. The Maenads live in a magical realm that is guarded by satyrs who kill and eat any man that goes near it. Pythagoras explains that they took Demetria to make her a Maenad and she would be held within their temple.
A woman is seen in her cell digging a way out. When she hears someone coming she hides the hole and covers her fingers in wax. She is then seen standing around a pit filled with stayrs and chanting as a man is led before their leader. Despite his claim that he was lost she tells him that he will learn their rites before dying. The woman toss his around and beat him while the others chant before throwing him into the pit. The woman looks on, expressionless.
Demetria's father is inconsolable when he finds out what has happened to his daughter and collapses. Pythagoras tends to him and prepares with Jason to head in the Forest of Nysa against Hercules' objections. When he sees the merchant coming, however, he decides to tag along.

Reception[]
Patrick K Sproull gave the episode an 8/10 in his spoiler-free review, and said "I consider A Girl By Any Other Name to be much better than the opening episode...Atlantis is only getting better."[1]
